2007 Discovery of the Mystery Land: The Northern Territory
Mr Man Liu was the initiator and key creative person behind the production of as well as a producer of the 5 part documentary series in Mandarin which was jointly produced with China Central Newsreel & Documentary Film Studio (CNDF) of China Central Television (CTV) and with support from Tourism NT, Senior traditional owners of Wurryi and Namurgardabu in Arnhem Land, a number of commercial sponsors both Australian and Chinese and many Territorians. The filming took place in the NT in August 2007. Most days of filming were in Arnhem Land but also the crew’s programme visited Darwin, Kakadu, Litchfield and the Red Centre. The initial broadcast was on CCTV 10 in December 2007. The series proved extremely popular and broke the CCTV record for ‘percentage of viewers’ for documentary series about a foreign location with 44% of total viewers tuning in. It has since been broadcast a further 3 times on the CCTV’s network’s Channel 7 & 10. The 4th broadcast occurred between 16 and 20 March 2009. 4 broadcastings of any series is extremely rare if not unprecedented and a mark of the series’ popularity with the Chinese viewers. In the initial stages there was opportunity to structure the project “Discovery of the Mystery Land: The Northern Territory” as a normal commercial endeavour but Mr Man Liu determined to proceed with the project as a philanthropic style collaboration together with CCTV with all contributors adding their pieces of effort into the project as: He loves the NT outback and its peoples; This approach enabled him to negotiate towards categorisation of this project within CCTV as a CCTV piece of work which he successfully achieved and the categorisation as a CCTV piece of work was a guarantee to broadcasting of this piece on this the largest and most influential Chinese network to untold numbers of Chinese people in China and around the globe. Such opportunity for certainty of broadcasting on the CCTV network of a documentary series about NT was too beneficial to the NT community at large to forgo in pursuit of a different style project with commercial profit factored. Mr Man Liu personally brought together all contributors on the project, was on the ground during every aspect of filming including leading and translating. He jointly edited with CCTV film directors of the cutting floor and organised the launch and media aspects of the project. He saw the project through from inception to conclusion with great care. Many of those whose efforts were integral to the project congregated in Beijing for launch activities in December 2007. Mr Man Liu gave careful attention and planning to ensure that representatives of all participating component groups were able to be there. From the Australian end: Maria Stephens, Aboriginal Cultural Advisor & Senior Traditional Owner of Wurryi in Arnhem Land, the then NT Minister for Tourism Kon Vatskalis and his team, Maree Tetlow, CEO of Tourism NT, Richard Doyle, Director Asia, Tourism NT, Jane Christensen, Director Asia of Voyages, Steve Farquer of Qantas, May Tong of Tourism Australia, the acting Australian Ambassador in China, representative of the Department of Immigration, and NT locals Gerry & Carol Goodhand, Jason & Kelli Trouchet, Adam Blake and Karl Goodhand all attended the launch activities in December 2007 as they had all contributed greatly to the wonderful outcome of the project.
